Our Curriculum
The theme of our 8th Grade Language Arts Curriculum is “Conflict” and I hope that you will enjoy the literary selections presented in the curriculum. We will read a variety of short stories, poems, nonfiction pieces, and a couple longer selections. These include: “The Diary of Anne Frank” and My Brother Sam is Dead.
We will work together to make connections to the literature and develop strong writing skills. We will also prepare for our FCAT Writing & Reading Tests scheduled for February and March this year. But, our curriculum is not just about beating that FCAT test, it is about developing life-long reading and writing skills!
You will write and read everyday so you need to come to class prepared, focused, and ready to give 100% effort!
Here is an outline of the units we will be covering this year:
Unit 1: Why does conflict occur?
Unit 2: What can we learn from confronting or avoiding a problem?
Unit 3: What is the relationship between change and conflict?
Unit 4: How do language and media influence our perspective?
Unit 5: What is worth fighting for?
Unit 6: In what ways does adversity bring out the best and the worst in people?
Unit 7: How can acts of inhumanity challenge our beliefs and assumptions about the world?
Unit 8: Can we create a world without conflict?
